Hypnotherapy offers a natural way to stop smoking more easily

There are all kinds of good reasons to stop smoking, such as increased health & fitness, saving money, cleaner clothes and homes, setting a good example to children, and living a longer and happier life. Since workplaces and public buildings became smokefree, more and more people would like to quit.  For many people, the only thing holding them back is fear that stopping smoking may be difficult or uncomfortable.

However, if you are ready to commit to stopping smoking, then with hypnotherapy it may be much easier than you think!

How can hypnotherapy make it easier to stop smoking?

When you decide to stop smoking, you may need to deal with two issues:

1. Losing the smoking habit – which may be done more quickly and easily with hypnotherapy:

Losing the smoking habit:

We are not born as smokers. Smoking is a learned habit, stored in your subconscious mind:

  1. Most smokers tend to smoke more at certain times or in particular situations - such as when they are bored, during breaks, or when socialising
  2. After a while, links develop in your subconscious mind between those situations and smoking
  3. Those links act as triggers that prompt you to smoke when the situations arise again

Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious mind, and can help to remove those unwanted triggers. Instead, it help you to focus on the benefits of being a non-smoker, and install new, responsible and positive approaches to those old trigger situations. 

 

2.  Managing physical withdrawal symptoms - which may be eased by hypnotherapy:

Physical symptoms of nicotine addiction

Even though cigarettes are harmful, smokers' bodies become used to – perhaps even addicted to – the physical effects of nicotine. Sudden withdrawal can sometimes cause initial feelings of anxiety, restlessness, irritability and even mild depression.

For many people, these symptoms are reasonably mild or short-lived, and suggestions given during hypnotherapy can make them much easier to withstand.

However, people who have smoked very heavily for many years may choose to use nicotine replacement therapy products in conjunction with hypnotherapy.  Nicotine replacement therapy – patches, lozenges or sprays – offers a way to withdraw from nicotine more gradually, reducing the physical effects more gently. NRT may be freely available from your GP, or can be purchased from pharmacies.

 

Success rates for stopping smoking through hypnotherapy

People often ask hypnotherapists about their success rates in helping clients to stop smoking. Don't be mis-led by hypnotherapists who claim success with a certain percentage of clients. As therapists are required to keep all client details strictly confidential, it is impossible to check and verify the success rates claimed by any particular therapist, so they may be unfounded. This is why the Advertising Standards Authority strongly discourages these kinds of claims.

Nonetheless, broad studies have shown that hypnotherapy as a method can be extremely effective in helping people to stop smoking. In 1992, New Scientist Magazine published the results of an extensive clinical study on the most effective ways of stopping smoking*. They combined the results of more than 600 different studies (involving over 72,000 individual cases), and concluded that you are 10 times more likely to stop smoking after one session of hypnosis than people who use willpower alone:

   Single session of hypnotherapy: 60%  

   Acupuncture: 24%

   Nicotine Replacement Therapy: 10%

   Willpower alone: 6%

Although these results are very positive, hypnotherapy did not help everyone who took part. Hypnotherapy is not mind control, or a magic wand - choice is always part of the decision to quit smoking, and you have to actively make that choice in order for it to be helpful for you.
